The Difference Between a Curriculum Vitae and a Resume

The Difference Between a Curriculum Vitae and a Resume

A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience, and education. While a resume is brief and concise -- no more than a page or two -- a curriculum vitae is longer (at least two pages) and provides a more detailed synopsis.
A curriculum vitae includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations, and other details. In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, employers may expect to receive a curriculum vitae.
In the United States, a curriculum vitae is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific, or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants.

Visa Preparation

Some Words

Preparing for Visa is a sophisticated task and another most important one. In this section I would like to share my experience directly regarding Visa preparation. So far I am interested to pursue my Graduate degree from the a reputed Canadian university, that's why my experience shared experience will mostly be regarding Canadian Visa preparation

GRE preparation

GRE preparation

As many as 700,000 aspirants sit for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) annually and almost all graduate courses and business schools accept a GRE score for admission. The test examines your analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning.
In August 2011, the format of the GRE was revised, in order to accommodate questions which expect you to react to ‘real-life scenarios’.
The test is four hours in length and gives no partial credit to examinees. “You have to nail the content just right,” says Lee Weiss, director of graduate programs, Kaplan Test Prep.
Many candidates about to appear for this admission test are high achievers and sometimes tend to take the tests lightly. Weiss says, “An average score of 600 in GRE requires a minimum 100 hours of preparation. However, the brilliant candidates often underestimate it. This is not a test to cram for; it requires consistent study—not 8 hours a day but one and a half hours a day for 2-3 months at least.”
Weiss also advises students to get used to the computer-based format of the test. “Practicing on the computer, and regularly, will build endurance and give confidence,” advises Weiss.

IELTS Preparation

About IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test exam is taken with pencil and paper, and takes three hours and 45 minutes to complete. It is divided into four sections: Speaking, Reading, Listening, And Writing.

Listening (30 minutes): You will hear voice recordings of both monologues and conversations, on different topics and in a range of accents. These recordings get more difficult as the test goes on. You will then have time to answer questions on the recordings to demonstrate how well you have understood them.
Reading (60 minutes): You will be given three written passages to read (from books, magazines, newspapers and journals). You will then answer a series of questions testing your comprehension of each passage.
Writing (60 minutes): This paper consists of two tasks. First, you will be given data in the form of a chart, graph, diagram or table and will need to write a 150 word summary demonstrating your ability to understand the information and describe the main features. In the second section, you will write a short essay of around 250 words, in response to a statement or question, demonstrating your ability to construct and articulate a brief argument.
Speaking (11-14 minutes): You will have a face-to-face interview with an examiner, during which you will be assessed on your ability to answer questions, interact with the examiner and talk at length on a familiar topic.
All candidates take the same listening and speaking tests, but there are different reading and writing tests for the Academic and General Training versions. If you are taking the test as part of a university application, you will need to take the Academic version. You should inform the administrator of this before the test begins.

My Experience
In this section I would like to share my personal experiences regarding the IELTS test. However, in this section, I also like to share the materials which I have found for my test preparation. I hope these will be helpful for you too.

Speaking Test Preparation
First of all I would like share a video with you which was helpful for me. This video describes, whether it is the same that to practice at home and a real test performance. These two should be different.

Recommendation letter

Recommendation letter
Recommendation letter is another must do thing for study abroad. Generally at least three recommendation letter is needed for a graduate admission. Recommendation letters are letters written by professors who know you, assessing your capacity to meet the requirements of a program to which you are applying. They're supposed to help decision-makers to get a better picture of your potential. The most helpful letters come from teachers who have had considerable contact with you, especially in non-classroom setting such as research labs.

It is advised to take the recommendations from the direct teachers, adviser or supervisor instead of others. In some cases professional recommendation may be required in case of verifying the professional research experiences. I have taken recommendations from three of my direct teachers. One from my undergraduate adviser, one from my undergraduate supervisor, and another from a course teacher. In case of taking recommendation from a course teacher it's better to contact those teachers who have given the highest grade in the exam. Actually those teachers feel comfortable to write about you. Some topic should be highlighted in the recommendation letter. Those are :

Relation with the applicant ( Course teacher / Adviser / Supervisor )
Class performance
Communication skill
Interpersonal skills
Research experiences
Ability to learn and dedication

I am leaving a link here about guidelines of preparing recommendation letter prepared by MIT admission committee [Link here ]. Hope it would be helpful.

Sample recommendation letter :

Date: 9 January 2014

Letter of recommendation

I am writing this letter on behalf of Jane Doe, who has been a student in my history classes for the past two years. During that time, I have found her to be both a strong student academically and a role model and leader for her peers.

Jane is the type of student who always takes the initiative to help out fellow students who may not quite grasp the material, and she does so in a way that is neither condescending nor boisterous. Though she is aware of her own intelligence, as evidenced by her willingness to challenge herself with honors courses and extra credit work, she has an air of modesty about her that makes her approachable and well-liked among her classmates.

In addition to being Jane's teacher, I also had the opportunity to serve as an advisor for the school community service organization she founded. Jane single-handedly organized group meetings to encourage student participation, and contacted local organizations to coordinate volunteer opportunities. Though I was her go-to person foradvice, I trusted her completely in managing the group on her own.

Jane would make an excellent addition to (name of university)'s Classof 2013. I recommend her without hesitation. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,

Writing SOP

SOP

Second most important thing in my experience was to make ready the statement of purpose (SOP). Statement of purpose/Intent/ reasons for graduate study all are the same. Statement of purpose is nothing but to reasoning, why one is interested in that particular program for what he has intended to apply. It also serves some other purposes like, it becomes an example of one’s ability of writing and expressing oneself clearly in writing. It helps the program faculty to select candidates matching with their interests. If you are the applicant then I want to say that, it should basically answer the question …. “Why should the graduate school admit you? ….what makes you special?
It is to remember that the SOP is the tool by which faculty gauge if one have what it takes to succeed in grad school and later in the academic discipline as a professional.

Purpose of a SOP
The whole purpose of SOP is to convince or persuade the admission committee and make one’s application stand out from the crowd. It should be the tool to express oneself. The statement of intent should focus almost solely on the academic subject being pursued. Admissions committees are not interested in whether the subject was enjoyable (that would be assumed) or the graduate school would be interesting, challenging, fulfilling, etc. They want to know how committed a candidate one is and if he is prepared – and motivated – to pursue more rigorous study. This should be a professional statement and it is the opportunity to present oneself as a serious applicant.

Information to be included
The admission committee goes through atleast 40-50 SOPs at a time. So the first few lines should be catchy. In brief, a SOP should contain -
Why are you applying to this program?
How has your experience (academic, work, etc.) prepared you to enter this program?
What do you plan to do – professionally – with this degree?
Major areas of interests
Personal uniqueness
SOP should be a demonstration of the knowledge and should not be a boring lecture because some highly trained professionals will read it and well known about the required skills which are important to the field. It should focus on the purpose of graduate study and the specific academic interests. That’s why the knowledge about the field should be well enough to state a preference, without being simplistic or pedantic. Research experiences, special achievements enhance the ranking of the applicant among others. So these should include. Again it is not advised to limit the SOP to a reaction of achievements, it’s not actually a CV. It is better to be honest or atleast sound honest while writing SOP. It should be university specific.

Length and Format of a SOP
At first it’s better to check is there any specific format or length recommended in the application instructions. If no guidelines are given than just a reliable and reliable statement with information stated above would be enough. Generally a SOP takes one to two pages of A4 size pages in length but length is not a problem while it is well written. There is no correlation between the length of SOP and the acceptance rate in practical.

Writing a SOP
In this case I like to share my personal experience here as what I have done for myself rather than advising. At the beginning, I have collected some samples of SOP from the seniors to know the general writing guidelines. I have also downloaded some pdf files regarding writing guidelines, but I think it will not be necessary while I have written the general guidelines already in the beginning of this page.  Then I just started drafting on my own language. After finishing the full statement I used to read it out infront of some of my friends and expect their comments over it. These comments helped my most in preparing my final SOP.

Do and Don’t at a Glance
Do:
Have a strong introductory paragraph. Catch the reader's attention.
Keep it within a reasonable length. Unless prescribed, plan on no more than two pages.
Use spell check, but do not depend on it completely.
Include your name on each page.
Be specific, accurate and truthful.
Make certain that your statement supports and is supported by the rest of your application
Turn negatives into positives.
Ask several people to review your statement before submitting it.
Don't :
Use the statement to explain a low exam score or GPA. These issues should be addressed in an addendum, which can be attached to your application.
Overuse the thesaurus.
Use cliches or quote others extensively.
Use the third person.
Send multimedia presentations, copies of papers or theses.
Philosophize.
Pat yourself on the back too much.
Be cynical or overly humorous.
List activities that are already on the application.
Repeat what is on your resume.

*** note : don't make common SOP and send copies to different Universities.

Mail to Professors

Mail to Professors

It very often happens that prospective students become confused wile drafting mail to professors for graduate studies. Before drafting a mail one should be very careful about to select the professors. Then the second important thing is to go through his researches carefully and sometimes it becomes necessary to match the research interests. Sometimes one can be confused regarding language test result. It’s necessary but not mandatory to complete the language test before mailing. I am attaching my personal mail draft with this section [ link here ]. I am also referring a link containing advice for prospective students by University of Virginia [ link here] .I hope it will be helpful.

MIT interviews / written by Dr Mahbub

MIT interviews

Here is some information and advice regarding MIT undergraduate admissions interviews

The interviews are informal.  Do not try to show off.
Be honest.
If you want to study engineering at MIT, you should have a good excuse for not studying at BUET.  MIT isn't much better than BUET for undergraduate engineering, and the students at BUET are comparable to the BUET undergraduates.
  • I am extremely nice, so don't appear defensive.  Just be yourself.
  • Everybody from Bangladesh has the same credentials; outstanding A-levels, perfect SSC/HSC results, etc..  So you will have to find ways to differentiate yourself.  In fact, if you are not the perfect student and don't have perfect grades, I will find you more interesting.  There are many extraordinarily creative students with less than stellar records; their special qualities often come at the expense of perfect grades, etc..
  • MIT is a technical school.  Mathematical ability is very important.  If you have not participated in the Mathematical Olympiad, you should explain why.  It is one of the best ways to differentiate yourself. FYI, I was not a perfect student in high school, but I was good at math competitions in the States.
  • About me: I am a mathematician/theoretical physicist.  I work on string theory and cosmology.  I teach at North South University where I teach mathematical finance.  I am about the age of your much older brother and was an undergrad at MIT in the 90's.  I am also interested in just about everything you can imagine.  I am the coach of Bangladesh's Mathematical Olympiad team. My father is Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar of Shujaan, etc..
  • Come to the interviews with questions about MIT.  MIT is not the place for everybody.  It is extremely important to know ahead of time whether you would like it there.  There are a lot of very good schools out there. Forget that MIT has a lot of "name value;"  go to a school where you will be happy.
  • Interviews aren't that vital to your application.  However, they can probably help to a degree. Just make sure they don't hurt you! Over the past two years (afaik) the successful applicants were interviewed by me.  I doubt that means anything. When you visit me, just act like you are visiting a friend.
  • Check the announcements section of this webpage for interview dates and when to meet me.   You should of course email me too.  However, don't expect an immediate response.   Also when you email me, on the subject line write MIT interview. That way the email goes to the right filter.
